AEC HONORARY AWARD

Nearly four decades have passed since the first Critical Economics Conference (JEC) was held in Madrid in 1987. The continuity of these conferences over time has been a key factor in fostering cohesion among critical economists in Spain, as well as in spreading heterodox economic thought throughout the country—a process to which the subsequent creation of the Association of Critical Economics (AEC) and the Critical Economics Journal (REC) has undoubtedly contributed.

For this reason, the Association’s Board of Directors has decided to create the “AEC Honorary Award” to formally recognize those individuals who, since the first JEC was held nearly 40 years ago, have contributed through their work and dedication to the development and preservation of the critical economics movement and heterodox economic thought. This Distinction will be awarded biennially, coinciding with the JEC, and will formally acknowledge that the work and commitment of certain individuals over all these years have been crucial to continuing to nurture this collective project. It has therefore been deemed fitting to bestow this institutional recognition as a token of the Board of Directors’ most sincere gratitude, which also expresses the prevailing sentiment of all those who are part of the AEC.

Thus, the Board of Directors is pleased to announce that it has decided to award the “AEC Honorary Distinction” in this first edition, to be held at the upcoming JEC2026, to two individuals who are deeply cherished among us for their excellent professional work and their tremendous social commitment: Miren Etxezarreta and Angel Martínez González-Tablas.
