
Daniel Chávez is an Ikerbasque research professor at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and recipient of an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). He is the principal investigator of the S-OIL project (The End of Oil and the Global South), a five-year research project that analyzes how state-owned oil companies in the Global South face growing pressure towards decarbonization in a context of climate crisis, fiscal dependence and demands for social development. Before joining UPV/EHU, he worked for two decades at the Transnational Institute (TNI) in Amsterdam, where he coordinated international programs on energy, public enterprises and development policies, and led research teams in Africa, Asia and Latin America. His work is situated at the intersection of political economy of energy, just transition and climate governance.
